The cdc25a protein functions as a phosphatase that dephosphorylates cyclin B-cdc2 complexes, activating the kinase to promote entry into mitosis. It localizes to the nucleus during interphase and relocates to the cytoplasm upon nuclear envelope breakdown. Expression is regulated during the cell cycle with peaks at the G1/S and G2/M transitions. In early development, maternal cdc25a mRNA is present in oocytes and is important for meiotic maturation and the rapid embryonic cell cycles following fertilization. [-]
