The dicer1 protein is an endoribonuclease that cleaves double-stranded RNA and pre-microRNA to produce small interfering RNAs and microRNAs, which are involved in RNA interference and gene silencing. It processes these RNAs in the cytoplasm. Its functions include a role in oogenesis, embryogenesis, gastrulation movements, neural development, and left-right patterning. The protein is maternally deposited into the egg and has zygotic expression; it is required for germ cell maintenance and is involved in the miRNA pathway during early development. [-]
