The gene cpeb3 encodes a cytoplasmic polyadenylation element-binding protein, an RNA-binding protein that regulates the translation of specific maternal mRNAs by controlling their poly(A) tail length. The protein is localized to the cytoplasm and is associated with processing bodies (P-bodies). It is expressed in oocytes and eggs, where it is involved in meiotic cell cycle progression, specifically during oocyte maturation, by mediating the cytoplasmic polyadenylation and subsequent translation of mRNAs required for M-phase entry, such as those encoding mos and cyclins.
