Furin is a proprotein convertase localized to the golgi apparatus and involved in proteolytic processing of precursor proteins into their biologically active forms. It cleaves and activates various growth factors and receptors, including nodal-related proteins and bone morphogenetic proteins, which is necessary for left-right axis patterning, neural crest formation, and mesoderm induction during embryonic development.
