The tac1 gene encodes a neuropeptide precursor protein that is processed into substance p and other tachykinin peptides, functioning as signaling molecules involved in neurotransmission, smooth muscle contraction, and inflammatory responses. In situ hybridization shows expression localized to the brain, spinal cord, skin, and pronephros. The encoded protein contains conserved tachykinin motifs and is proteolytically cleaved to generate the mature peptides which signal through neurokinin receptors. [-]
