The mcm4 protein is a DNA replication licensing factor that functions as part of the pre-replicative complex to license DNA for a single round of replication per cell cycle by loading onto origins during the g1 phase. It localizes to the nucleus during interphase and is excluded from chromosomes upon nuclear envelope breakdown. Expression is detected in the germ plasm of early embryos, with maternal mrna being degraded after the mid-blastula transition while protein levels remain stable until gastrulation; zygotic transcription begins during neurulation.
