The arpp19 gene encodes a cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP)-regulated phosphoprotein acting as a pseudosubstrate inhibitor of protein kinase A (PKA). Its expression is regulated by progesterone, and the phosphorylated form (p-arpp19) is a key regulator of meiotic cell division, controlling the cdc2/cyclin B circuit during oocyte maturation. The protein is required for spindle assembly and maintenance during meiosis I and meiosis II. It localizes to the cytoplasm, nucleus, and associates with mitotic spindles in dividing blastomeres. Expression is detected in oocytes, eggs, and throughout early embryonic development including the neural plate and brain. [-]
