Definition: "A division of the forebrain situated between the telencephalon and midbrain. In the developing brain it is the more posterior and ventral of two forebrain neuromeres, the other being the telencephalon; major derivatives are the eye vesicle, the brain pretectal region, the thalamus, hypothalamus, and epithalamus (including the habenula and epiphysis)."
