As yet there is little supportive evidence for the existence of a hormone-membrane interaction mechanism in somatic target cells, but there is no reason to exclude the possibility, either alone in certain cells or associated with the classical receptor system, since a hormone may well have more than one molecular target in a given cell. The present paper reviews studies of target cell membrane interactions with steroids, modified to prevent cell entry, in order to determine whether the interactions observed in oocytes are of wider significance.
