The has2 gene encodes a membrane-bound hyaluronan synthase that produces hyaluronic acid, a major component of the extracellular matrix. This enzyme is localized to the golgi apparatus and plasma membrane. During development, has2 mRNA is expressed in the oocyte and early embryo, with prominent expression later in the mesoderm, particularly in the cephalic mesenchyme and notochord. The synthesized hyaluronic acid contributes to cell migration and tissue morphogenesis by regulating hydration and space within the extracellular matrix. [-]
