The inhba gene encodes a subunit of both activin and inhibin, which are dimeric signaling molecules belonging to the tgf-beta superfamily. In these frogs, the inhba protein functions as a ligand that signals through specific serine/threonine kinase receptors. It is involved in mesoderm induction during early development, neural patterning, and the establishment of left-right asymmetry. It also plays a role in notochord formation, somite development, blood island formation in the ventral blood island, and tailbud morphogenesis. Expression is documented in the blastula and gastrula stages, the dorsal lip of the blastopore, the notochord, presomitic mesoderm, somites, pronephros, brain, branchial arches, and the heart field during development.
