The gsk3b protein is a serine/threonine kinase that functions as a component of the wnt signaling pathway, where it phosphorylates beta-catenin targeting it for degradation and is itself inhibited by wnt signaling. It regulates dorsoventral patterning, with inhibition leading to secondary axis formation. The gene is involved in establishing left-right asymmetry and is required for normal neural development, including patterning of the midbrain-hindbrain boundary and the neural tube.
