The runx1 protein functions as a runt-domain transcription factor localized to the nucleus. It is involved in definitive hematopoiesis, specifying myeloid and hematopoietic stem cell lineages. The gene is expressed in the lateral plate mesoderm, cranial mesenchyme, branchial arches, and olfactory placodes. Its function is required for the development of the posterior branchial arches and is implicated in neural crest cell development and eye formation. [-]
