The foxc1 gene encodes a forkhead box transcription factor localized to the nucleus. Its protein is involved in regulating neural crest cell migration, contributing to the proper formation of cranial structures and the branchial arches. It also plays a role in the development of the heart outflow tract and is implicated in ocular and anterior segment development. Expression is observed in the periocular mesenchyme, migrating cranial neural crest cells, and the developing mesoderm. [-]
