Research Description
When the embryonic heart first forms in vertebrates, it consists of a simple linear tube of muscle that pumps blood along its length. As the embryo develops, different regions of the linear heart tube acquire differences in both their cellular structure and properties, transforming a simple peristaltic pump into a highly complex, multi-chambered organ with its own vasculature and valves.
