Name: Sergei Y Sokol
Position: Professor
Research Description:
Using a number of biochemical, genetic, cell biological and embryological approaches in Xenopus and mouse embryos and mammalian tissue culture cells, we are addressing the following questions:

How is the top of an epithelial cell different from its bottom? Can the same mechanisms that control cell polarity be involved in the regulation of embryo polarity, culminating in the conserved 'head-to-toe' body plan?

How do extracellular growth factors regulate cell polarity and shape of individual cells composing a tissue?

What are the determinants of asymmetric cell divisions? How is mitotic spindle orientation determined in neural progenitor cells?

What is the molecular difference between the front and the back of a migrating cell? How can cell movement be stimulated during wound healing and prevented in metastatic cancer?
