Research Description:
My research interests concern the mechanisms of neuroendocrine integration. The amphibian melanotrope cell has proven to be an ideal model system to elucidate integrative mechanisms. This cell produces the peptide a-melanophore stimulating hormone (a-MSH) which is involved in the regulation of pigment dispersion in dermal melanophores during the process of background adaptation. The activity of this cell can be easily manipulated, i.e. place an animal on a black background and the secretory activity of the cell is activated; place the animal on a white background and the cell is inhibited. This easy manipulation of cell activity is advantageous in a research program where one wants to study the mechanisms controlling the activation and inactivation of a cell.
