Research Description:

The Dawid group studied the frog Xenopus laevis and the zebrafish Danio rerio to obtain insights into mechanisms of vertebrate development. They used molecular and genetic screens to identify genes that regulate development, with an emphasis on signaling pathways and cell interactions. In particular, they carried out a screen in zebrafish using in situ hybridization to identify differentially expressed genes, and applied DNA microarray technology to identify genes with regionally or temporally restricted expression in the frog and fish embryo. The group published numerous papers on the  Fgf pathway,  Fgf and Wnt signaling and mechanisms of axis specification in the Xenopus and zebrafish embryo.

Over his career, Dr. Dawid authored more than 290 publications. He served as Editor-in-Chief of Developmental Biology, Chair of the Board for the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, and on numerous advisory committees. His outstanding achievements were honored with election to the National Academy of Sciences and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the Lifetime Achievement Award of the Society for Developmental Biology, and honorary doctoral degrees from Lausanne University, Switzerland and the Technion, Israel.  Dr. Dawid’s close associates recall that he was an experimentalist at heart who loved to be at the lab bench.
