The epidermis. The epithelium of the epidermis is a keratinized stratified squamous epithelium, and is composed of four distinct layers; the stratum corner, stratum granulosum, stratum spinosum, and stratum basale. A thin stratum lucid also appears between the corneum and granulosum. Melanocytes are present throughout the epithelium.
